VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
Why the word "freelancer" could be affecting the success of your VA business!
FROM FREELANCER TO CEO: THE MINDSET SHIFT THAT TRANSFORMS YOUR VA BUSINESS
We all dream of freedom—the ability to set our own schedules, live life on our terms, and build a powerful, successful business. Many women start online or virtual assistant (VA) businesses with high hopes of building a thriving client base, earning what they deserve, and saying goodbye to the 9-to-5 grind. I get it—I’ve been there, and now I’m living that dream, far from the restrictions of corporate life.
But why is it that so many women struggle to find clients, and even when they do, they hit a ceiling, unable to grow their businesses? I believe the issue lies in mindset.
BREAKING FREE OF THE “FREELANCER” MINDSET
When I first launched my VA business, I saw myself as a “freelancer,” a label I thought captured the freedom and independence I was after. But here’s the problem with a freelancer or “side-hustle” mentality:
- It feels temporary—like an experiment you’re just “trying out.”
- It leaves room for failure, giving you an easy out to return to your old job if things don’t work.
- It can make you feel like you’re just scraping by, chasing any online project to make ends meet.
- It makes you feel less like a business owner and more like a temporary worker, trying to get by.
This mindset can affect how clients perceive you. They may treat you as an employee, or assume you’re not fully invested in your business. Shifting away from this mindset is essential if you want to grow, thrive, and scale.
THE CEO MINDSET: OWNING YOUR BUSINESS, OWNING YOUR SUCCESS
Starting a VA business makes you more than a freelancer—you’re the CEO of your own company! When you step into this mindset, you gain confidence, clarity, and direction for building the life and business you truly want. So, what does thinking like a CEO look like?
- You’re in control: You set the goals, call the shots, and design your path to success.
- You prioritize growth: From setting financial targets to scaling your operations, you’re always moving your business forward.
- You own your schedule: You structure your time, choosing tasks that align with your goals.
- You make decisions for long-term success: Every choice benefits your business, your personal life, and your future.
With a CEO mindset, you’re ready to build a stable client base, reach new income levels, and achieve the flexibility you dreamed of.
MAKING THE SHIFT FROM FREELANCER TO CEO
Here are some practical steps to embrace your role as a business owner and CEO:
- Affirm Your Role Daily: Remind yourself that you’re the CEO of your business, not a freelancer.
- Embrace Your Power: You took the leap to start a business when others were too afraid—acknowledge how strong that makes you.
- Own Your Title: When people ask what you do, confidently say, “I’m a business owner and CEO.”
- Invest in Learning: Build skills in areas like strategy, scaling, and business operations. Take courses or connect with mentors to gain the knowledge you need to succeed.
