10 myths you Need to Know before Starting your Own VA Business
With the Virtual Assistant and remote work industry booming, it’s no surprise many are drawn to this path! But there are some common misconceptions that could hold you back or steer you in the wrong direction. Here are the top myths about being a VA and the reality behind each one.
MYTH #1: BECOMING A VA MEANS YOU ARE A FREELANCER
After 10 years in the industry, I can assure you: being a VA is much more than freelancing. Many people start by thinking of themselves as freelancers, leading to a mindset of constantly competing for short-term, hourly gigs. But seeing yourself as a business owner shifts the way you attract clients and build your brand. Don’t limit yourself to “freelance”—think of yourself as the CEO of your VA business.
MYTH #2: BEING A VA IS A VACATION
Yes, the VA life offers flexibility—you can skip the commute, take care of personal errands, and be there for your family. But it’s far from a “Netflix and chill” lifestyle! Beyond client work, building a successful VA business takes time and dedication. Growing your brand, networking, and setting yourself apart from the competition require daily commitment. It’s work, but the freedom and control over your schedule make it worth every bit of effort.
MYTH #3: FINDING LONG-TERM, QUALITY CLIENTS IS HARD
The biggest myth to bust? That securing quality clients is a challenge. Finding clients isn’t hard if you’ve set up your business right, done the groundwork, and understand your target market. When you know your ideal client, their needs, and the unique value you bring, you’ll see clients gravitating toward you. It all starts with a solid foundation and the drive to pursue quality work.
MYTH #4: VA’S DON’T MAKE GOOD MONEY
Many assume that VAs only make modest incomes and often struggle to make ends meet. But the truth is, with the right setup and strategy, VA businesses can bring in 5- to 6-figure monthly earnings. With a strong approach and persistence, building a profitable business is entirely possible.
MYTH #5: YOU NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO START
If you’ve read my story, you know I didn’t start with a big budget. I found ways to build my business with free tools and resources, from marketing to systems. You don’t need a fortune to begin; experience, creativity, and determination will get you a long way.
MYTH #6: YOU NEED A DEGREE OR SPECIAL SKILLS TO BE A VA
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a degree to start a VA business. Many successful VAs, myself included, started with little formal education or specialized skills. What matters most is your drive, willingness to learn, and a commitment to helping your clients succeed.
MYTH #7: YOU HAVE TO QUIT YOUR 9-5 TO START A VA BUSINESS
Many think they need to quit their jobs to make their VA business work. In reality, keeping your 9-5 while you set up your VA business is often the smarter choice, especially if you need a steady income. Building your business gradually allows you to establish a foundation before transitioning full-time.
MYTH #8: THERE ARE TOO MANY VA’S OUT THERE FOR YOU TO STAND OUT
The VA field is indeed growing, but what the market needs are quality VAs who are committed to excellence. Focusing on providing exceptional service and bringing value to clients will always set you apart from the competition. Ignore the numbers and concentrate on how you can deliver outstanding results.
MYTH #9: IT’S CHEAPER & EASIER TO DO IT ALONE
One of my biggest wishes starting out was for a mentor—someone who could guide me through the challenges. Building a successful VA business is possible alone, but having a mentor with industry experience can fast-track your progress and prevent costly mistakes. Find someone who can support you, answer your questions, and keep you on the path to success.
MYTH #10: THINK YOU’ll FAIL
“Ms. Negativity” is a voice many of us hear when we start something new. It’s normal to feel self-doubt but don’t let it hold you back. Embrace those fears as fuel to push you forward. Starting a VA business could be one of the most empowering decisions you make—one where you control your future.
